Red Ribbon Week inspires students to dress up to fight against drugs.

Student Council’s Drugs Alcohol Safety and Health committee will promote Red Ribbon Week Oct. 27-31 through a variety of activities.

“We want to promote awareness for the negative effects of drug use and what drugs can do to you,” junior Shruthi Krish said.

The DASH Committee will have multiple events going on at school throughout the week to help encourage drug abstinence among students.

“We’re promoting ‘Say No to Drugs’ days and we’re doing dress up days to stand up to drugs,” DASH Committee member Nayoung Hur said. “Friday, students can sign a pledge in the shape of a heart to stay drug free. It is in the shape of a heart to remind students that they should care about their health and know that drugs will destroy it.”

The dress up days are:

  • Monday: “Team Up Against Drugs” wear your favorite sports team gear
  • Tuesday: “Be Smart, Don’t Do Drugs” nerd day
  • Wednesday: “Don’t Mess with Drugs, Don’t Mess with Texas” Texas Pride
  • Thursday: “Dress for Success,” Fancy Thursday
  • Friday: wear red for Red Ribbon Week.

The DASH committee believes it is important for students to understand the effects of drug use.

Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign that began in 1988 intended to inform students about drug abstinence and the negative effects of drug use.

“I think that it is admirable that we are doing stuff for Red Ribbon Week,” senior Logan Grooms said. “Kids should know that doing drugs is bad.”
