Theater Starts New Year on a High Note with Musical “Hairspray”

As the first play of the new semester, the drama department presents its production of Hairspray. The musical will have a three day run, Jan. 15-17 at the Raymond E. Hartfield Performing Arts Center. The ticket price will be $10 each.
“We’ve always wanted to do Hairspray,” theater teacher Aaron Johnson said. “Also, we think it’s got an awesome message and it’s well known so people will come to see it.”
Putting such a high-energy play together has been a challenge for the cast and crew. With a flooded stage, rehearsal canceled due to potentially bad weather Saturday and a large cast, the road to Hairspray wasn’t completely smooth sailing.
“The biggest obstacle has been coming together as a cast,” sophomore Sophie Niles, who plays Velma Von Tussle, said. “At first, we needed motivation and now we are really trying to see ourselves as our characters.”
Despite the struggles, the cast is looking forward to seeing all the work they have put in on the stage.
“We have amazing costumes and it’s going to be great seeing everyone in them,” junior Jasmine Cardenas, who is playing Amber Von Tussle, said. “What I’m excited about is seeing what we’ve been rehearsing in a tiny choir room on a big stage.”
