Senior Kailan Bray scores after an intense battle for the ball.

On Jan. 27, the Mavs played Cedar Ridge and won the game 76-54.
The boys played a great game using skill and determination to come out in victory. However, according to the coach and players, the key to success is ambition, practice, and the will to come on top.
“For these games, the team has to condition a lot,” senior Armoni Brooks said. “There is a lot of mental and physical training that we need to go through to see the positive results in the game. In reality it’s a grind to get through the season.”
Before and after the game, the lives of the players are busy. On average, the boys practice about nine hours a week and give extra effort on weekends or free time.
“We practice about two hours every morning,” senior Kailan Bray said. “We do heavy lifting, daily exercise, running, and practicing game routines.”
In addition to extra practice, the boys need to manage their academics. With traveling games, long practice hours, and heavy course loads, it can become difficult for the boys to keep up with homework and their grades.
“We all work hard in the classroom,” boys’ basketball coach Darrell Hagemann said, “They work really hard on and off the court.”
The next home game will be played on Feb. 6 against Rouse at 7 PM.
