Another season of Rupaul’s Drag Race has come and gone. This season was a landmark, reaching 100 queens and 100 episodes. The entire season was a homage to seasons past, with the first episode being the most memorable design challenges.

As a nice contrast to season seven, queens in season eight had character to spare. There was also a good mix of visual queens, comedy queens, pageant queens and even a professional celebrity impersonator. The top three were all different styles: Bob the Drag Queen, a classic comedy queen, KimChi, a makeup artist, and Naomi Smalls, a more traditional queen.

Even though drag race is a competition, it is well known that winning isn’t the most important thing. It’s obviously ideal, but as long as the queens make a good impression on the audience, they are going to be successful.

The grand finale was an epic close to the season. The top three gave a final performance to a song written specifically for them; in a bid to make a final impression on RuPaul and the judges. The highlight of the night was the crowning of America’s next drag superstar, not only because a new winner was announced but because of Violet Chachki’s  look. She wore a custom, handmade ball gown, with a prosthetic crown on her head, done by makeup artist Gage Munster. That look alone reminded everyone she reigned like no other queen has reigned before.

In the end, Bob the Drag Queen was announced the winner. She was very deserving and amazing, but it was the obvious choice; we all knew that she was going to win. Cynthia Lee Fontaine got the other honor of the night as she was crowned Miss Congeniality by season seven fan favorite Katya. She stole everyone’s heart with her infectious personality and sweet nature, representing the spirit of Miss Congeniality perfectly.

Overall, season eight was everything it needed to be. The talent was off the charts, the queens were memorable, plenty of  drama and petty fights, and, as always, we were reminded that as great as the contestants are, they will never be the supermodel of the world that RuPaul is.
