New Philosophy Class Begins

This year, the Social Studies Department added Philosophy as a course for 10th-12th graders. The course will last two marking periods, giving students the option to choose between the first and second semester to attend the class.

Philosophy is being taught by world history teacher Jeffrey Longino in room A200. He is looking forward to the school year with a completely new course.

“I feel optimistic,” Longino said. “It’s content that I study at home on my own. Teaching something I normally like as a hobby is starting the year off good.”

Students in the class will learn about the origins of Philosophy and various concepts relating to it. They will also learn how to apply certain skills to their lives.

“It’s a class that ties old philosophical ideas to a more modern scope,” Longino said. “They should expect to challenge their understanding of things, look at new perspectives and build their critical thinking skills. I started studying it because it attempts to answer questions of everyday life.”

Senior Alejandro Perez is taking Philosophy this school year. He was motivated to join the class because of his previous knowledge on the topic and his hope to learn more.

“I’m excited about this class,” Perez said. “I’ve watched videos of many philosophers discussing philosophical arguments. I’m mainly looking forward to learning how old philosophers have impacted modernized philosophy.”

While teaching Philosophy, Longino hopes that the lessons reflect what everyone experiences in daily life. He also hopes to create a sense of relatability through the course.

“Philosophy is the attempt to teach people that we generally have the same issues,” Longino said. “I hope to teach young adults that there are techniques and theories that help people feel better or that they have things to relate to.”
