With each passing game, fewer people have attended the varsity football games this fall. It was somewhat embarrassing to see only 25 students at the game last Friday against Del Valle, which turned out to be a Mav win in a thriller. It’s too bad that only a small fraction of the student body got to see one of the most exciting games in recent history of Maverick football. So for the rest of you who weren’t there, here are four reasons why you should attend every football game you can.
-It is a social outing. Everyone is going to be there. Texas high school football is nationally renowned, not only because of the games, but the atmosphere in general is crazy. Everyone gets behind their team no matter what. Additionally, with the amount of people there, you’re bound to find someone you haven’t seen in awhile, or hang with friends while watching the game. There’s just way too much going on around the game for you to be missing out.
– The players could use your support. Most everyone at this school knows at least one varsity football player so why not support them? When football season ends, most of them will be at your basketball, baseball, softball, or whatever games. I’m willing to bet that if a large crowd showed up like the Round Rock game of last year, the team will feed off that support.
-Even if you don’t have ties to the team, you could still attend to support the Majestics or the band at halftime, or be there to see your choir friends sing the national anthem before the game, or yell for and with the cheerleaders. Like I said, there is way too much going on for you to miss out.
– The game won’t even take your entire night. Most football games last from about three hours on average. And if you go to the game with friends, you’ll still have time to go somewhere with them afterwards, or even tailgate before the game.
Most teenagers have a curfew at 12 or 1, so don’t waste your time going to a movie, or hanging out at home when you could do those things any time of the year. There are only 10 Fridays you can see the football team every year, so take advantage of the social opportunity and go. The bottom line is, going to football games is tradition. They are fun to go to no matter the result, and what else could you do instead on a fall Friday? It’s lame when people make excuses for not ever going to football games, when most everyone goes at least a couple of times. If football had as much support as the basketball team or the baseball team, the team’s success would soon follow.
