Garbage

Oh joyous day, a can left unguarded! Heavy metal lid left open, slightly unsteady on its base, perfect. towards the beautiful cylinder I move, completely undetected by any. I climb to the top of it, and look down inside, my mouth watering with the mere idea of my first meal in days. It’s… empty? That can’t be right, these are never empty! In my rage I topple the seditious tube, making a horrible racket. Inside, they must have food inside. There’s a little flappy thing, and I’ve seen their guards enter and leave through it. I tear across the field to best the flap. It falls open at my touch, truly I am the master of infiltration. I stride inside their nest, and know that somewhere inside there must be something. There’s nothing in here either, at least, not immediately. These are wily ones, must be hiding their food.

I leap on their rocks and start tearing open everything I can. My first target contains some white powder that isn’t particularly tasty. I keep searching. My next victim falls prey to my claws, and bursts to reveal some… tree bark? I give it an inquisitive nibble, and it is far softer than I anticipated. My next reaction is how it tastes. It is overwhelmingly sweet, amazingly sweet, it’s as though I’ve discovered heaven in this nest. I can’t stay for long, so I eat my fill and leave, before they wake.

Tomorrow I’ll bring some of my ring-tailed friends.
