An array of dazzling, twinkling lights more than a mile long, illuminate the night like millions of colorful stars fallen to Earth.
This spectacular image is the Trail of Lights, a holiday feature that has been unique to Austin since 1965. Powered by HEB and originally called the Yule Fest until it was rechristened as the Trail of Lights in 1992, it has become an annual Christmas tradition loved and enjoyed by thousands of Austinites.
In 2010, the City of Austin suspended the trail citing budget issues. This winter, however, it has made its return and is forecasted to be better than ever thanks to the RunTex Carrozza Foundation and Forefront Austin.
“It was pretty disappointing when they didn’t have the Trail of Lights these past two years,” senior Anika Mina said. “The one this year is supposed to be really amazing.”
The Trail of Lights opened Dec. 16 in Zilker Park and kicked off with a grand opening featuring various performances by carolers, dancers and musicians. Each night will sport a different theme, such as Heritage Night or Military Appreciation Night, and holiday staples such as hot chocolate, cider and fresh funnel cakes will be available for visitors to enjoy. Even better, the entertainment doesn’t stop with the gorgeous arrangements of thousands of lights: at the end of the trail is a variety of fun activities available for families.
The Trail of Lights is an iconic holiday tradition in Austin and is one of the things that contributes to the city’s distinctive culture. Its return is a cause for celebration for many, and has added even more to the merriment of the holidays. It will run until Sunday, Dec. 23, operating daily from 6:30 – 10 p.m. Admission is free
“I’m so excited for the Trail of Lights to open up again,” junior Melissa Garcia said. “It’s so pretty, and it’s something fun to do that makes me excited for the holidays. I missed it.”
