There are many restaurant combinations that follow different motifs, for example the McDonald’s and Tiger Tote combination is practical, KFC and Taco Bell emits the goal of speed, and A&W and Long John Silver’s focuses on family. Phil’s Icehouse and Amy’s Ice Cream at 5620 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78756 is a combination meant to provide authentic Austin tastes.
Phil’s is known for it’s diverse selection of burgers, including their particularly famous Allandale Burger, named after the nearby street. The sourdough buns are exceptional, containing a certain level of sweetness that most breads either exceed or cannot reach. Phil’s also provides a unique jalapeño cheese bun, which is delectable.
A variety of different meat, cheese and vegetable combinations are suggested, but there is an option to build-your-own-burger. They provide the traditional beef patty, a chicken option or the veg-head friendly veggie patty. Some exclusive hamburger additives that are not supplied at most burger joints include avocado, chili, sauteed mushrooms and bleu cheese.
Now we arrive at the most remarkable item Phil’s Icehouse distributes: the mixture of freshly cut french fries and sweet potato fries. These are the perfect addendum to their glorious burgers. The sweetness of both of their sourdough buns and the sweet potato fries makes for a plethora of ecstatic flavors in your mouth.
Different people pair different food items together, but I think ice cream and burgers have always been a well-known combination, and Amy’s Ice Cream is the best place to get homemade ice cream and frozen desserts. The genius of combining these two restaurants supersedes the invention of Wal-Mart, McDonald’s and, perhaps, even sliced bread.
Amy’s is a slightly expensive ice cream shop, but they also sell milkshakes, frozen yogurt, ice cream cakes, fruit ices and sundaes. They are all so delicious. They are famous for their Mexican Vanilla Ice Cream, but you can never go wrong with any of their chocolates. Some favorite flavors also include Belgian Peanut Butter Cup, Sweet Cream, Banana, and their alcohol ice creams such as Apple Pie, and White Lightning.
Established in Austin 1984, the Austin Chronicle describes it as a “quintessentially Austin institution” which “dominates the local ice cream scene.”
Getting a mini cup and perhaps a crush-in is usually enough for me, also quite enough for my pocketbook. But if you are with a group and you guys can decide upon a maximum of three flavors I would advise you to purchase a carton and scoop it out to share. You will save a lot of money.
So next time you are in the mood for genuine Austin food, head over to Phil’s and Amy’s, they will positively treat you right.
