Illusions: An Allusion to the Past
“You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.”
Dr. Seuss was a fitting theme for the 2015 Illusions dance recital May 1-2 which showcased the senior Majestics and line officers heading off to college and saying their farewells. The performances also included routines from the Majestics team, Sapphires, dance classes, Mav men, Musicale, and other guest performers from Cedar Valley, Deerpark, and the Star Dancers.
“This was my first year watching Illusions, and it gave me a pretty great impression,” junior Vishal Bandaru said. “The show had a spectacular illustration of coordination between all the dancers. The Dr.Seuss theme was also very unique.”
In total, the show featured 34 performances. Upon entrance to the Raymond G. Hartfield Performing Arts Center, guests were greeted with Dr.Seuss decorations such as Truffula trees, Dr.Seuss hats, and various pictures. During the performance, directors Brooke Solomon and Jamie Hatley referenced quotes from Dr.Seuss’ works while introducing each dance routine to the audience.
“I really liked the music and effects at the show,” junior Jeremy Lee said. “Although I didn’t know the theme of Illusions before the performance, I immediately caught on when I walked through the PAC.”
For many dancers, Illusions was a bittersweet experience; they performed for their last time on the team before high school graduation. Some dancers had tears in their eyes and the Sapphires had a group hug before going on stage to perform their “Crazy in Love” jazz routine.
“Being a part of the Sapphires Dance team was an amazing experience and this year the team has really grown together as a whole and became a family,” freshman Aditi Lavani said. “Performing the last time of the year was very emotional but at the same time it was a proud moment to see how far we have come.”
Through the sentimental performances, Illusions bonded team and class members together and provided the audience with an outstanding show.
As Dr.Seuss once said…
Don’t cry because it’s over.
Smile because it happened.
