How to Teach a Teacher

Geometry instructor follows student, get’s the 411 of school life

It is a universal truth that Mondays are rough for everyone. Regardless of your position (teacher, student, administration) chances are the day will probably feel: a.) too long, b.) too boring, c.) too tedious, or d.) all of the above.

Monday, March 7 was no exception.

The Student Leaders Advisory Committee, also known as SLACers, conducted a professional development initiative where teachers would get to reverse shadow students so they could get a different perspective of the modern student life. The first educator who volunteered was Mandy Lynch. Her specialty is geometry and algebra … the mathematics. She got the chance to follow yours truly, myself. Here’s what happened.

1st Period: 9:05

Snapchat Update: Meet Mandy!

I began the day trying to find Mrs. Lynch. I got to school around 8:45 and immediately went to hunt her down. I had no idea how she looked or where her classroom was, but I knew – according to a classified source – that she was “very chill.” Thanks source.

After I failed to locate her, I went to class. Confused I tried to contact ITS KristaTyler – a fail as well. Soon after a young woman dressed in a Tyler’s shirt, jeans and a bright pink backpack entered the class. No Way, I’d thought, There is no way she was Ms. Lynch. I introduced myself and made sure, repeatedly, that she was my shadow.
The “fun” began when class started. My 1st period class is Practicum in Health Science, so Lynch got to sit through an hour and a half of boring world health videos. She was enlightened to serious global health issues, which if mathematically calculated, probably bored her to tears.

Is this the life of a student? So far . . . yes!

Snapchat: How Teachers Take Notes

After the series of videos ended, we were assigned to take notes and work on a report. Her notes were nice, detailed and artistic. I won’t lie, I wish I had her note taking skills.

3rd Period: 12:21

Status: *feeling productive*

Snapchat Update: Buzzfeed Quizzes are Life

So newspaper was probably the most interesting class I had. It was relaxing and productive. Lynch will be co-writing this experience with me. We spent the second half of the class taking random Buzzfeed quizzes where we were enlightened to our past, present and future.

4th Period: 2:35

Status:*feeling HIGHLY stressed*

Snapchat: late to class . . . again!

Physics, the one and only class where science and math make sense. This class was the first class that Lynch was late for. The reason for this? Ramen, cookies and a danish. It was a unique experience for Ms. Lynch, who had never received a tardy before.
The entire perspective, on my part, was nice. I could provide her with an inside look with what goes through a typical day of a student – although it wasn’t very typical. It felt odd having a teacher follow me, but I would do it again. Ms. Lynch is the first of many teachers who will get the opportunity to follow other students.
