A New York judge denied singer Kesha a court injunction Feb. 16 that would have freed her from her current record contract with Sony and producer Dr. Luke. This is the last twist in the long legal case after Kesha accused Dr. Luke of rape and abuse back in 2014.
The verdict has created a lot of buzz with fans starting an online campaign, #freeKesha. While she is in a legal binding contract with an incredible amount of money invested in it, fans are arguing that money shouldn’t be put over a person and she shouldn’t be made to work with the man who abused her.
While the news was devastating, Kesha has received a crazy amount of support from fans and celebrities alike. Taylor Swift donated $250,000 for any financial issues; and countless female celebrities, like Lorde and Ariana Grande, tweeted support. Jack Antonoff and Zedd went as far as offering to produce new music with her and leak it themselves.
This case is representative of the larger issue about how the system treats abuse victims. Putting a contract and money ahead of the victim is what’s wrong with the system because it makes money more valuable than the wellbeing of a person.
