Cake doughnuts are a fun treat that are easily made from the comfort of one’s kitchen. They’re a delicious snack and something small to brighten up early mornings on the way to work or school. This recipe takes a minimum of 25 minutes to prepare and yields 12 doughnuts covered in cinnamon sugar.

Ingredients

Doughnuts:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup of white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 dash of ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons of melted butter
  • ½ cup of milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 quart oil for frying

Cinnamon Sugar:

  • 100g of granulated sugar
  • ½ tablespoons of cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 375 degrees F. If a deep fryer is not available, a saucepan can be used. For the saucepan, fill it up to ⅓ of the way full and put it on high heat until it’s the desired temperature. If it’s a gas stove, make sure the flame does not extend further than the width of the pan.
  2. Sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl. Then, mix in the butter until the mixture is crumbly before stirring in the milk and egg until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Knead the dough lightly, then dump the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Next, roll or pat the dough to ¼-inch of thickness. Then, cut it with a doughnut cutter or if one is not available, two round biscuit cutters of different sizes can be used.
  4. Lay a few doughnuts in the hot oil at a time in order to not overcrowd the pan and make the oil overflow. Then, fry the doughnuts for about three  minutes and turn them until they are golden brown. Next, drain the excess oil on the doughnuts with towels.
  5. Mix together the granulated sugar, cinnamon and salt in a bowl large enough to fit one doughnut. Next, submerge the doughnuts in the cinnamon sugar, lightly coating the whole surface.
