The alternative/indie band Wallows performed at the Moody Center, performing songs from their new album Model.
The opener Benee was a positive choice for the audience, with most of them knowing the songs she performed.
Benee opened her performance with her song Kool creating a lively atmosphere for the rest of the concert. Later in her set, she debuted a new song that seemed to be a hit. Although it seemed only a few people knew most of her songs, the audience felt comfortable dancing to her music.
Benee closed with her most popular song Supalonely which raised the energy throughout the crowd. Benee’s engagement and dancing with the audience uplifted the Wallows performance.
Wallows’ live performance was captivating. They performed their songs in many varying ways, including switching instruments, backdrops, singers and even stages; halfway in they performed at a smaller stage near the back of the pit to play acoustic which resembled a ‘tiny desk’ performance, the stage switch caused a divide in the pit, leaving an awkward space in the middle where people spun and danced, creating an engaging ambiance.
The beginning of the concert was interesting, they debuted with their more unpopular release Do Not Wait performed behind a curtain, with only their silhouettes in sight. The song’s gradual build was nice and aroused anticipation for their stage reveal, their silhouettes were soon revealed and a roar fell over the crowd.
The setlist did a good job of transitioning between old and new songs. Out of 25 songs performed by Wallows, 11 were from their recent album release Model. A bold choice knowing that a decent portion of their audience might not know all of their new releases. That being said, they still made the performance captivating enough to hold the audience’s interest and successfully avoided losing their attention with their memorable stage presence and movements.
Performing in the Moody Center is a big step for their musical career, as the last time they passed through Austin on tour they performed at Stubbs’ Bar-B-Q, a much smaller venue. Throughout the performance they interacted with the audience often, repeatedly stating that Austin is one of their favorite places to perform exciting the audience. After a 1 hour and 45-minute show Wallows truly put on an unforgettable experience.
