The library hosted an artistic Lunch and Learn on Tuesday during lunch to celebrate Arts and Education Week. The goal of the student project was to be able to create a joyful play diorama with materials that are easily available and free.
“The ultimate goal is for us to have our dioramas that we are going to put on the glass brick that represents the diversity of our McNeil community,” Librarian Amelia Lewis said. “We are creating our own McNeil folk art that we are gonna put together in one big piece. I learned a lot about what folk art is and who Maud Lewis is, so I learned a lot myself. That is really the goal, have some fun and learn some things, and come together as a community.”
At the Lunch and Learn, students learned about Canadian Folk Art and a Canadian folk artist named Maud Lewis.
“I really liked just looking at her art,” senior Maxfield Rotches said. “I thought the Canadian folk artist that we looked at had a really cool house and story. I learned that she was a folk artist who was disabled and one of her only outlets was painting.”
Lunch and Learns allow students to interact and learn in a peaceful environment. Rotches said that Lunch and Learns break up the day with Lewis’s good ideas for activities.
“I really like the community our librarians built,” senior Lila Brown said. “I think they work really hard and I like to support them. The librarians are sweet and always try to make a welcoming and fun time for everybody.”
