Incubus, loosely defined as fitting inside the alternative genre of music was a pleasure to see. The band opened with Coheed and Cambria, who performed at the Moody Center on September 7th. The concert lasted from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Incubus’ opening song, Nice to Know You, is the first track of their hit album Morning View. It was an anticipated opener, as Incubus released a Morning View remaster this May. It set the mood for the rest of the concert, energetic, but with restraint.
Occasionally, the performers moved around the stage (besides the stationary drums and mix table) and played acoustic versions of their releases. Regrettably, the lead singer, Brandon Boyd, was sick with a cold, so his voice was unable to carry the same energy or pitch as was usual of his style as a lead singer.
The concert went with some unexpected routes including covers of Umbrella and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. Even with detours from their standard set of songs, the concert mostly revolved around their remaster of Morning View, ending the album with a performance of Aqueous Transmission.
After playing through the album, they performed some of their most popular releases, amping up the energy with songs such as Pardon Me and ending on their most well-known song, Drive, acting as a finale to their concert.
Throughout the performance, Boyd would move the mic away from himself, quieting his voice to let the crowd sing along audibly. The crowd occasionally would overpower the music itself, especially on the more popular releases.
The stage was set with multiple light displays and four screens showcasing the band members, with a large focus on the band’s relatively new bassist, Nicole Row, having been with the band for a little over a year.
Despite the band’s first album release being in 1994, their music is still relatable and going strong, 30 years later.
