Asian American Pacific Islander Club held their second meeting of the year on Friday, Oct 18 to celebrate the Halloween spirit. At the meeting, they had their first annual AAPI member of the month, a volunteer opportunity, interactive horror stories and a cookie decorating contest.
Every month, students can nominate their friends to win AAPI member of the month. Students who win will earn a certificate and a prize. For October, senior Kabinaya Venugopalsamy won and earned a certificate.
“It feels nice,” Venugopalsamy said. “Me and my friend just did it as a joke and I didn’t expect to win. It was my first time winning.”
In the cookie decorating contest, students decorated halloween themed cookies to win boxes of Pocky, a sweet Japanese snack. Freshman Abby Flores won first place and seniors Tulip Nepal and Avanee Nagory won second and third place, respectively.
“I’m really proud about it,” Flores said. “I’m happy that my friends encouraged me to do a cat, so I owe them this one. There was a lot of extra cookies, so I just put them together [to make the cat.]”
Students were presented with the opportunity to volunteer at Austin Community Center to participate in an ethnic fashion walk and dance demo at their Diwali Celebration event.
