Dungeons and Dragons club (D&D club) has grown to a sizable club at McNeil over the last year. Every Wednesday, social studies teacher George McGilligan and drone aviation teacher Braxton Cannon hold the club in A200 after school.
“I started D&D club because I love D&D and the club I was in before was disbanded,” sophomore President William Pendell said. “I was told that there used to be a D&D club here, but I realized it no longer existed, so I wanted to start it back up.”
The club originally contained 14 members, hosted personally by McGilligan and organized mainly by Pendell.
“[D&D club] was originally a sort of private, personal thing, so [William] and his group could have a place to play by themselves,” McGilligan said. “What ended up happening is that several other people, from word of mouth, ended up joining. Didn’t even advertise the club at all, [it] just started kind of getting bigger and bigger.”
The club now has around 40 members, although not all attend every Wednesday. To accommodate for this larger club size, McGilligan asked Cannon to also host the students in his classroom, E104.
“I get a dedicated day just to do school work, just get prepared for the week, while [those in the club] all have fun in the background,” Cannon said. “It’s very funny listening to their conversations in the wild adventures that they go on in their heads.”
The club starts at 4:30 p.m. and typically ends at 6 p.m. The club is individually run, each group keeping track of their own game, the teachers acting as guidance for the groups they host.
“This club really isn’t that difficult to attend,” freshman Nathaniel Hall said. “It honestly feels like the only time I’m not weighed down by schoolwork.”
