French National Honor Society (FNHS) held their January and February meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 28. They went over cultural events celebrated in France and point and volunteer opportunities across campus.
“We have international competitions, like the international French contest,” senior Co- President Shennie Ye said. “We also help French students and are a part of various volunteering activities and donations.”
During January in France they celebrate the arrival of the three kings, croissants, Le Rallye de Monte Carlo and most recently, the week of Les Soldes (winter sales). Les Soldes
are government-regulated sales in France, held twice a year. Stores across the country offer massive discounts, so many go shopping.
“In France the big sales or everything over 50%is government regulated,” French Teacher Livia Tutuc said. “So all companies are required to have sales, they want to get rid of the current apparel and goods for the new season.”
While many in France are shopping from the days of the 12-31 of January, music in France has always had diverse array styles. According to thebubble Paris is “the city that has it all” and FNHS has chosen Cyrille Aimee as their artist of the month.
“Our social officer picks art artists and music artists, like painters related to French,” Ye said. “We pick an artist for every month, so that our members can learn a little bit more about French culture.”
Akshara Diwakar said that she learned that Aimee was recently nominated for a grammy related to her jazz music. Inspired by the afro-caribbean rhythms of bachata and merengue, Aimee reached critical acclaim across her multiple albums, with her most recent album a Fleur de Peau.
At the meeting on Tuesday the FNHS officers went over an array of point opportunities one being for the upcoming February holiday Valentines day.
“So we have a lot of socials, for example, for February, we have a Valentine’s Day social coming up, a collaboration with the Spanish [national honor] society,” Ye said. “We have a trivia activity about French, or Spanish, and we usually always have food at the socials.”
Ye said that “Fat Tuesday” is coming up, which is also known as Mardi Gras. The FNHS will have a social eating cake’s. For more information go to the official FHNS website here.
