While New Years is often a time people set goals for self improvement, maintaining their goals can be the challenge for most people.
One month into the new year Mavericks show promise keeping their New Year’s resolutions as they largely believe keeping a goal is the way to improve.
“I’ve had lots of new year’s resolutions that have helped me become a better person,” freshman Elena Saeiditanha said. “I’ve had a lot of fitness goals in the past years for the sport I’m doing and also [goals] for reading, school and grades.”
Saeiditanha believes her goal for this year will allow her to spend more time being productive rather than spending time on the internet.
“My new year’s resolution was to use less social media and that’s what I’ve been doing so far,” Saeiditanha said. “I wanted to save more time and allocate my time better so I can focus on things like my studies and other stuff that I’m doing.”
As the year progresses, Saeiditanha believes it becomes harder to keep her goals as her bad habit becomes more tempting.
“It’s really easy in the beginning because you have lots of motivation but as the year goes on it gets harder because the more time you don’t spend on it the more time you want to go back to your [old] habit,” Saeiditanha said. “I found that I go back to social media when I’m bored so I’ve been just trying to fill my time with something else.”
Sophomore Taylor Ebeling believes he has been able to stay on track one month into the year due to checking in on his goals.
“Sometimes I just forget about it for a while and then I’ll remember again and I’ll look back and I’ll be like wow I’ve been doing a bad job or i’ve been doing a good job,” Ebeling said. “I definitely get a lot of motivation from looking back and reflecting.”
Ebeling believes setting goals is very important as they help him push himself.
“I would actually say I’m pretty good at keeping my [New Year’s Resolutions]” Ebeling said.
“They are a good way to set goals for ourselves and see what you can accomplish.”
Senior Symbri Nipps believes that this year she has taken a new perspective on New Year’s goals as she hasn’t kept many in past years, but plans on keeping herself more accountable.
“My New Year’s resolution is to drink one Stanley [cup] of water a day,” Nipps said. “I think setting these goals are helpful because you can start fresh. This year I’m more committed to staying on track.”
