Jack and Rose
“Are you sure you weren’t followed?” I whispered to Rose as I pulled her along.
“Yes, Jack, I am sure, now please do not ask me again.”
“Sorry it’s just… you know if anyone sees us we will go to jail.”
“I’ll go to jail they won’t probably put you in there because-”
“Rose, we aren’t going to talk about that here okay? This is supposed to be a good memory.”
“Yeah you’re right, sorry Jack.” said Rose. We started climbing again, it was getting harder for me, I started to get pretty winded.
“You can do it Jack we are almost there.” I didn’t say anything because I was trying to save my breath. Finally we reached the top and we pulled ourselves over the ground.
“So, we are on top of the Hollywood sign yeah?” Rose said looking at me.
“Yeah, I can’t believe you did this for me, thanks again”.
“I’d do anything for you, you know that. We’re going to be together till the end, no matter how close or far that may be.” Rose breathed.
I didn’t respond, she already knew I felt the same way. She was the first person I called after they told me that it would be best to stop chemo and live the last few days of my life “healthy”. Now she’s fulfilling my lifelong dream of sitting on top of the Hollywood sign and enjoying the view. Rose is the only thing I will miss when I die. I look over at her and capture the way her red hair blows in the wind, then I close my eyes wanting this last image of her frozen in my heart forever, then my breath stopped.
