Glitter Bomb
It was finally my 18th birthday and I couldn’t have been more excited. 18 was obviously an important age and so I enjoyed being able to revel in it. It was the one day of the year that was literally ALL about me for once.
When I woke up that morning, I smelt eggs cooking with bacon and could hear a slight sizzle as the bacon cooked. My mom must have gotten up early to make me a special breakfast since I still had to go to school that day. “ Happy birthday sweetheart.” My mom said as I walked into the kitchen. “ Thanks Mom, you’re the best.” I say in reply. Later my brother came down and he gave me a hug that I gladly returned. Then it was off to school.
Unbeknownst to me, my family was planning a surprise party for me. Complete with a glitter bomb to go off when they shouted “Surprise!” Throughout the day I was congratulated and offered well wishes from friends and teachers. And I even got a few small things from my boyfriend. I actually enjoyed my day and was excited to continue celebrating with my family.
As soon as I got home, I felt like something was off. I felt like something was happening that I should know about. I didn’t hate surprises, but I wasn’t a huge fan either. As I open the door, I feel a tickle on my face as something landed on it. Putting my finger to my face to investigate. I feel glitter and at the same time I am accosted by the sounds of “ Surprise!” by my family and friends. Then I feel more glitter being thrown into my face.
I smile politely and excuse myself to try and get some of the glitter off. It is literally everywhere. I’m not angry or upset. I’m amused and surprised that everyone I care about would go through the trouble and stress of planning something for me. I’m grateful and I soon head back to my party with a genuine smile on my face, ready to enjoy being 18.
