The Sapphire dancers have arrived. This team of 16 dancers is new to McNeil, consisting of ninth graders to seniors.
“The dance team is for students to be able to be in more activities and be a part of dance at McNeil to show their support,” dance teacher Meagan Liles said.
The Sapphire dancers perform for the first time at homecoming, in a joint routine with the Majestics.
“Dancing with the Majestics is going to be pretty great,” senior Sarah Melendez said, “I know that the Majestics will be there at our performances cheering us on throughout the year and it just seems fitting that our first performance is with them.”
The Sapphire dancers are a team similar to the Majestics; while the Majestics have double blocked class Sapphire dancers are only single blocked. The Sapphire dancers also have a smaller team and less of a time commitment than Majestics.
“We’re not double blocked like the Majestics and because the team is just now starting up we’re just now gaining our footing, but more time will be going towards dancing once competition season and homecoming starts,” Melendez said, “We will be having after school practice after school once a week or more depending on how much work a certain dance needs and if competition is coming up.”
Eventually the Sapphire dancers will also be performing at pep rallies, usually dancing for the football and basketball team pep rallies. Girls hoping to make the team try out in November and are then- if a current student at McNeil- admitted to the team.
“The girls who make the team in November miss out on the homecoming performance and a pep rally, but they are able to be in the spring show and competition,” Liles said.
Come out to cheer for the Sapphire dancers’ first success at homecoming.
