National French Week Begins

FNHS Inducts New Members

It’s time to start waving around those blue, white and red flags because National French Week is Nov. 4-8.

“National French Week was designated by the AATF, an organization for French teachers and others interested in promoting the study of French, as a way to advertise the French language in schools,” language teacher Judy Sasaridis said. “Different schools promote different activities.”

There is a noticeable difference between the number of students enrolled in Spanish and French at McNeil. A lot of people feel that French isn’t a useful language to learn, but National French Week is designed to change that – like with the poster contest to help create interest in French at McNeil.

“This week, the FNHS is having a meet and greet for new members, as well as their induction as members,” Sasaridis said. “Also, Ms. (Jenna) Brewer and I are always showing clips from French films, playing French music and doing activities on French websites in class.”

There are many opportunities to learn about the French language, culture and food at McNeil, including French language classes, a French Club and French National Honor Society that students could join and enroll in.

As for the activities for National French Week, all students will see the posters along the halls; specific activities during language classes, such as the AP French chocolate taste test, are exclusive only to students enrolled in French.

“All friends, teachers and families of FNHS members are invited to the induction ceremony,” Sasaridis said. “But to the chocolate testing, no. They’ll just have to take French.”
