The team huddles up to raise their spirits for the rest of the game.

Boys’ varsity soccer reclaimed the title of district champions and are already on a roll by beating Anderson High School 3-0 and Klein Collins High School 3-2 in their first two playoff games. The team’s next goal is to win a state championship but are in for a long run before that can be accomplished.

“It is always a great feeling to become district champions,” coach Justin Sharrock said. “What sounds like an easy task is actually a long and drawn out battle with six other teams. Each team plans all fall to prepare for the season. The injuries, illness, weather and high school life change everything.”

Due to the team’s skill, practice and determination, the record of the season is currently at 17-4-3. Despite having a lot wins, there are still a lot of games to play and 64 teams to beat in order for the team to win the state title.

“We have been without our two senior captains Alejandro Labastida and Jeff Utzman for the past two games,” Sharrock said. “They have had to lead from the sidelines and allow their teammates to compete for them. I cannot say enough about this group of guys. They truly want to be great.”

The Mavs’ next match is against The Woodlands for the regional quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Brenham.

“Our players have a great love of the game and really understand the importance of being a great teammate,” Sharrock said. “For this reason, we were able to withstand all of the obstacles we faced on our journey to the top.”
