Diversity Club Hosts Annual Culture Fair

Aladdin’s magic carpet wasn’t the only way for him to explore the world. He could have experienced different cultures and countries right here at McNeil on April 4 through Diversity Club’s sponsored culture fair with booths and performances from Morocco, Germany, America, Japan, India, Spain, Mexico, China, Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. Free food, games, salsa dancing and music would have also accompanied him through his flight of fancy.

“I loved the culture fair,” sophomore Eleanor Wakou said. “And the free food made it even better.”

The fair started promptly at 5 p.m. and allowed students to visit tables showcasing different countries and clubs. Passports were handed out to encourage students to visit all the tables and ask questions. After an hour, the fashion show started with people dressed in styles unique to their culture. Countries seen on the runway were Japan, Korea, Pakistan, India, America, China, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Mexico.

However, this was only the beginning to the night of fun. Afterwards, the performances started off with a Korean song sung by Kate Maeng and was followed by Bollywood dances from seniors and sophomores, Kpop and breakdancing from two Westwood clubs, a Native American tribal dance, a Hawaiian dance, a Chinese dance, a dance by Ballet Folklorico, beatboxing by Nick Ge, Dawool drumming, and a Korean song performance. Each performance was well received by the audience and cheers filled the cafeteria.

The prospect of extra credit made the night even better. Through the event, people learned other aspects and the large diversity of McNeil’s student body.

After the show ended with beatboxing, the audience lingered, hoping for more. As people walked towards the doors, comments on how great the fair was were thrown about.

“Through the culture fair and fashion show, I became more culturally aware than before,” Wakou said. “For the fashion show, the models had great outfits and I enjoyed seeing all the different styles.I loved the performances too, especially the breakdancing. I am so glad I came.”
