Sweeping into First Place
Showing Up & Showing Out FFAers place at TCYS
Seventeen entries placed at the Travis County Youth Show Jan. 15-17, with freshman Ivan Kaderka taking Grand Champion with his duroc pig named Fred.
“Even though I won Grand Champion, I still enjoyed hanging out with my friends and helping them with their animals,” Kaderka said.
TCYS is a county-wide youth agricultural show for schools such as Westwood, Round Rock, Hendrickson, Stony Point, and Vandergrift. Each school and district hosted trial shows before coming to TCYS to help prepare each student to understand what the judges at TCYS will be looking for.
Judges look for students who know all the little details about their animal. Students will be asked to name their breeder, the type of feed they are using, how much protein is in their feed, among other questions.
TCYS offers more than just livestock competitions; it also gives students an opportunity to show their cooking and artistic skills.
“I love making the salsa because it tastes good,” senior Colin Rhea said. “Ive been using my great grandmother’s recipe for the past four years, it’s really good salsa.”
