7 HOSA Students Advance to State
HOSA students competed at Area 1 competition hosted at John B. Connally High School March 28 in a variety of events centered around different aspects of healthcare. At the end of the day, 17 Maverick were recognized for their achievement in their respective categories.
“I prepared for my event, Healthy Lifestyles, by rehearsing what I would say in four minutes and answering the sample questions that they might ask me in the event guidelines,” junior Jeremy Lee said. “I also made sure to document what activities I did to reach my goal and researched the benefits of eating right and sleeping early.”
HOSA’s mission is to promote health care careers and opportunities to secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students . Students can choose from 56 competitive events that are aligned to the National Healthcare Foundation. Through competitions, members can gain valuable assets not traditionally taught in the classroom like how to dress and speak professionally, debate, and how to make creative posters under a given time limit.
The following students were recognized at Area 1 competition. Those who placed among the top three in their events will advance to the state convention held in Dallas on April 9-11:

“I feel pretty prepared for state,” Lee said. “The purpose of my event is to make a goal, show my progress, and then show steps in a binder on how I am reaching this goal. It worked out perfectly for me since the varsity soccer team is still in playoffs. I am training even harder and documenting these days as state gets closer and closer.”
