Art Showcased at RRISD Contest
Art students competed in the Round Rock ISD Art Show competition. Out of all the entries, 19 Mavericks placed ranging from honorable mention to best of show.
“It felt great knowing I won best of show,” senior Yewon Lee said. “I didn’t expect it at all.”
Most of the students entered had no idea about the competition and were sceptical about entering.
“My teacher said she was going to enter my piece and I said okay,” senior Jessica Babyak said.
She won first place in ceramics in her division.
Some students placed more than once.
“I was surprised because I didn’t think you could get first and second in the same division,” junior Alyna Pham said. “I guess because they were two different pieces it was possible.”
Pham competed in ceramics.
“My imagination was part of my inspiration,” Lee said. “It started as just a drawing then started to get more serious. The six pieces are a journey to America. It’s my story how I came here, felt and the circumstances I went through.”
Babyak’s piece took a different turn.
“The bust was Medusa. I really like Greek mythology,” Babyak said. “I liked the shape of the snakes and thought it was something different than hair.”
Just placing meant a lot to all those who entered.
“Any competition you win is great because people get to see your art and see the value of it,” Pham said.
