Open House welcomes parents, teachers
The halls filled with students and their parents admiring the displays put up about club information and greeting teachers, eager to show their classrooms. Volunteer students helped direct the parents and answered any questions.
“I always come to the Open Houses to have contact with the staff at school,” Lisa Sasin, a parent of a sophomore, said.
The 2016-17 Open House, hosted by staff and student volunteers, showcased the students’ expectations and lessons taught by the teachers for the parents to view Aug. 31 from 5:45-8:30 p.m.
Student volunteers handed out flyers and directed the Maverick families to the gym and cafeteria to get their students’ schedules.
“I signed up to get volunteer hours for drama class,” freshman Leicy Jenkins said. “We met up in a room and talked about where we were going to be stationed.”
Volunteers received service hours required by their respective clubs and organizations.
Additionally, Open House helped parents understand the learning environment of their children.
“My favorite part of introducing myself to my students’ parents would be being able to put a face to the name,” math teacher Mandy Lynch said. “The interaction makes it personal.”
Open House gave the opportunity for the staff to build a relationship with the parents and students.
“It’s nice to put a name and a face together, being able to find out what the teacher expects, and just listening to the information,” Sasin said.
