Academic UIL team advances in 8 events, takes 3rd overall
Students competed in the district UIL meet and placed third overall. Eight students advanced to the Region II meet April 8 at Baylor University in Waco.
In the March 23 competition at Round Rock High School, the Computer Science Team of juniors Arka Majumdar, Vinh Ton and sophomores Aadhithya Kanna and Connor Simpson took fourth place in the district competition. Majumdar placed fourth individually.
“Considering it was the first time McNeil competed as a [computer science] team, it was nice that we got fourth place,” Kannan said. “I loved meeting other talented students and plan on continuing to compete to get better in the future.”
For journalism, students competed in the categories of News Writing, Feature Writing, Editorial Writing, and Headline Writing.Senior Larissa Herold won first in Feature (advancing to regionals) and took fourth (alternate) in News while junior Mariam Khwaja placed fourth (alternate) in Headline Writing.
The rest of the district meet was held March 25 at Pflugerville HIgh School. Mavericks placed in 10 events.

Speech: Lincoln-Douglas Debate: junior Pranav Vijayan, fourth place (alternate)
Science: Overall (combined Biology, Chemistry, and Physics): Ton, first place (advancing to regionals); Majumdar, fourth place (alternate); senior Ishav Desai, sixth place (alternate)
Chemistry: Majumdar, first place (advancing to regionals); Ton, second place (alternate)
Physics: Desai, sixth place (alternate)
Mathematics: Golla, second place (advancing to regionals); junior Jaden Fang, fourth place (alternate); Majumdar, fifth place tie (alternate)
Prose Interpretation: junior Faith Herring, (alternate)
