Current state representative and former McNeil graduate, James Talarico made a campus appearance on Tuesday, May 14. His talk took place at 11:00 a.m., in the theater black box located in N-wing.
Talarico shared what led him to his political career, his day-to-day life experience while working in the legislature, ways that the youth can stay involved in politics and his upcoming agenda for his office. He will also address if politics are as truly divisive amongst political parties as they seem.
Government and Economics teacher, Tara Hedlund one of the organizers of the event shared her excitement for the event.
“I’m hoping to gain more insight into some of the procedures that take place in the state legislature. Hopefully, I can bring more perspective into my teaching of now of first-hand how it all works,” Hedlund said.
Although she is excited for herself to attend the lecture, Hedlund is more eager to share this experience with her students.
“I think any personal connection and exposure is important for students. This type of event gives way more than any lesson can. I want my students to stay involved in local, state, and national political conversations. The youth voice is so important to the direction of our country, so I try my best to spark that interest in my students,” Hedlund said.
To attend, students and faculty members must be in the Black Box approximately by 11:00 a.m. It’s recommended that those attending should plan to take C lunch that day since the lecture will run through A lunch. Passes will be distributed through Hedlund’s room, B116.
