On Friday, Aug. 9 McNeil hosted Meet the Mavs for incoming Freshmen to meet their future classmates when the lightning alarm went off causing the event to be canceled.
The event being canceled not only affected the incoming freshman who missed the chance to see and meet clubs, it also affected groups who spent time during the summer to work on performances or special skills to display at the event.
“As a Majestic, we worked really hard on our performance for two or three Weeks and it being canceled was hard work put down the drain.” Freshman Gloria Reyna said. “We planned a hip hop performance like we usually do every year, kind of like a halftime performance. Just not being able to show off our hard work was really disappointing.”
Freshmen missed out on their first meet the mavs and seniors missed out on their last. There was a slim chance of rain but as the chance kept building so did the disappointment.
“When the storm arrived, our lightning detector alerted us that lightning was within 10 miles,” Head Football Coach Scott Hermes said. “At that point, our policy is to clear the field for a minimum of 30 minutes once lightning has left the area. Unfortunately, the storm kept building and we continued to get lightning.”
Although there was disappointment resulting in the event being canceled, there were some positives. Freshman Corbin Edwards was happy to see his friends and be united with his FFA goat, Chupacabra.
“I was a little upset that Meet the Mavs was canceled because I wanted to see what the whole thing was before lightning struck,” Edwards said “but I got to hang out with my goat so it was good.”
Despite the cancellation and frustration of it, memories were still made and so were first impressions. Families had a chance to go inside and meet the clubs in the gym for a brief time before everyone got sent home.
