There will be a staff development student holiday on Friday, Nov. 1. The day off will also represent the celebration of Diwali, unlike previous years.
Diwali is known as the festival of lights. It celebrates bringing in the good and releasing the bad, the triumph of light over darkness. Religions such as Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism celebrate this major festival.
“I used to miss the praying that my mom does,” sophomore Dhiyanna Ganesan said. “I’m excited to stay home this year to help my mom prepare [for the celebration].”
Although staff will not have the day off, college prep math teacher Tanisha Willson is glad that students who participate in this celebration will have the day off to continue with the religious festival.
“I think students having the day off to celebrate is awesome,” Wilson said. “It should always be this way.”
