Administration announced a new finals schedule for this year’s midterms. This year students will attend all four classes on the same day. In the past students would only go to two classes with study periods and their exams.
According to this year’s schedule, the first day of testing will begin with the first period exam, then students will attend their second and third period classes before attending their fourth period exam.
“There’s a lot of wasted time on this new schedule regardless of us having to be here or not. I don’t think academically students will get things done in class,” French teacher Livia Tutuc said. “There’s no study hall for the first and fifth period classes and then afterwards the following Wednesday and Thursday we meet again with the same group of kids. What are we supposed to do if students have already taken the exam?”
Tutuc thinks a main reason behind the new schedule might be related to justification of students needing to be in school for a certain amount of hours.
“I’m exempt from my sixth period exam but because of this new schedule I’m going to be sitting in class all day just to be getting attendance when I could be at home because I have an off [period],” junior Zayna Sidote said. “We still had to be in attendance according to the old schedule for finals last year now that there are more classes in one day and I just don’t see that it’s necessary.”
English teacher Isabella Gonzalez said she can see what the school is trying to achieve; it’s just that she doesn’t see the productivity because students will be stuck in class.
“This year’s schedule is going to be interesting to see how effective it will be, especially after you’ve already taken your final,” senior Lily Smith said. “Hopefully it works well though and the week speeds by.”
