Throughout January, prospective International Baccalaureate (IB) sophomores will attend specialized counselor conferences and flexes including the upcoming IB flex meeting on Thursday, Jan. 30. to discuss their next two years of IB classes. These meetings aim to help the prospective students plan what classes to take, how to balance their electives and answer any questions those sophomores may have.
“Students who are committing to the advanced academic pathway of completing the IB Diploma Programme need time to choose the correct courses, discuss their choices with parents after the first meeting and then make the final decision about their participation in the programme,” IB Coordinator, Emilee Hinegardner said.
Head Counselor Sonia Baker and IB Coordinator Hinegardner aim to create an outline for how the prospective IB students junior and senior years will look. Since the IB Diploma is a two year program, decisions for students futures in IB are made during sophomore year.
“IB allows students to internalize knowledge and process it according to their frame of reference,” Baker said. “It helps them to develop a global mindset and see ways that they can change the world. IB allows students to direct their own learning and develop the skills and confidence to make a larger difference in the world.”
During IB flex meetings, prospective IB students will be able to ask current IB students and teacher questions about the IB program, such as curriculum and workload. Later, in February, there will be a second meeting where students may finalize their IB schedule for the junior year.
