“The Addams Family” is the fall show being performed by MavTheatre Company on Oct. 16-18 at the Raymond E. Hartfield Performing Arts Center.
This musical comedy follows Gomez Addams as he struggles to keep a secret from his wife, Morticia Addams; that secret being that his daughter, Wednesday Addams, has fallen in love with a “normal” young man from a respectable family, Lucas Beineke. Everything changes, however, when they invite Lucas and his parents over for a dinner party.
“Playing Morticia is giving me the ability to dance on a stage for the first time in a while because I have usually been playing roles that aren’t as much of a dancer as they are an actor,” senior Kaitlyn Kenney, who is portraying Morticia, said. “And I’m also challenging myself by creating Morticia’s character because she is a 50-something year old woman with children. I’m 17.”
MavTheatre has gotten hold of vocal director Andy Hager, from McCallum High School, in addition to choreographer Nat Uehara, also from McCallum.
“I think the dances are really good,” senior Andy Quarnaccio, who is portraying Gomez, said. “The choreography team is really talented and the dances are a lot of fun.”
MavTheatre has also gotten a new technical director coming from Cedar Ridge High School, teacher Eutimio Trevino, though he did temporarily leave during the production due to a family emergency.
“I definitely can’t blame him for taking time off to go be with his family,” sophomore Hallie Sowada, assistant stage manager, said. “Family can be first no matter what. It did certainly put us behind, but I know that the tech crew is going to try their absolute hardest to get us back on track.”
The company has been blocking the scenes the past few weeks, and are moving past this hiccup in production.
“I think it’s going to be incredible, especially with our set design and our awesome production team and our amazing actors and technicians,” senior Madelyn Cregar, stage manager, said. “I think it’s going to be amazing.”
