McNeil DECA hosted its first competition workshop of the year on Oct. 21, giving members an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming district season.
The workshop was designed to help students strengthen their skills in both roleplay and written events. Members were divided into two groups, one practicing case studies and presentations and the other refining written projects with guidance from McNeil’s DECA competition committee.
“The McNeil DECA Workshop is a time for members to come in and learn more about their events and get extra time to work on what they need for competition,” DECA leadership said. “In one room we have students work on case studies and learn more about how to present to judges, while in our written room members get their presentations and papers reviewed.”
The main goal of the event was to build confidence and readiness ahead of district testing and submissions. Members also had the chance to ask questions and receive personal advice from experienced DECA competitors.
“This workshop allows for first-year members to learn about how competition works and what it looks like,” leadership said. “Committee leaders are able to provide personal advice on how they believe the best ways to advance are.”
Attendance at the workshop has grown steadily, from around 20 members last year to nearly 40 this fall. Leadership attributes the increase to the supportive environment the sessions create.
“Some standout moments were seeing kids immediately engaged in our workshops,” DECA leadership said. “Afterwards, our main feedback was that members wished they had more time, which told us it was truly helpful.”
Organized by McNeil’s directors of competition, the workshop was planned over the summer and finalized in September. The DECA officers hope these events will continue to improve chapter morale and reduce the stress that often comes with competition.
“DECA is a good opportunity for all people, no matter their skill level,” leadership said. “By having these workshops, we’re giving less experienced members a chance to feel more confident in their skills and enjoy the DECA experience.”
Two more DECA workshops are scheduled for Oct. 27 and Nov. 5 as members continue to prepare for district competition later this semester.
