Something that I think is missing in almost every school’s curriculum is a required class on personal finance. There are so many classes that we take in high school that make me wonder
when will I ever need this? I’m sure that some of the information we don’t think we’ll need might come up one day in our lives and we’ll be glad that we learned it, but it would make more sense to include a class that everyone will know for sure that they will use.
A class on personal finance would benefit every single student because that’s something everyone has to deal with at some point in their life. It could include lessons on how to balance a checkbook, ways to save for college or retirement and maybe even how to invest money.
Tons of kids finish high school, get to college and have no idea how to manage their money. College students have to buy textbooks, school stuff and dorm supplies in addition to having some funds for eating or going out with friends. Since many students are uninformed, they end up having to call their parents a few weeks into college to ask for money.
Those who don’t choose to go to college right out of high school have it even harder because they don’t have a place to stay that’s already paid for. Many high school graduates choose to attend ACC after high school and they’ll need to know how pay bills and budget for groceries, transportation or gas (possibly even car maintenance), and what to do in the case of emergencies.
Some parents are good at teaching their children to be responsible, but some kids have no idea what real life is like. Instead of making these people learn all these important life lessons the hard way, it would be much more beneficial to give them a little preparation before they have to deal all of this.
