Oftentimes when it’s time for students to select their electives of choice, they’re left stumped because what they may want to study is not offered at school. Instead they’re forced to choose classes they might not be as interested in, or classes that may won’t help them after high school. Two important classes that should be offered at the school are fashion and graphic design.
The variety of courses offered on campus are quite limited. There are very few design classes and students who are thinking about pursuing something related to graphic or fashion design would have to opt in to taking classes like art, digital media or a publications class to learn and engage in something of a similar field. While it is similar, it’s not the same as taking a class specifically for those careers that goes more into depth in its content and would be beneficial for students who may plan to pursue either in the future.
Having a graphic and fashion design class will also help teach students fundamental skills they can use in their everyday life. Graphic design teaches important software skills like how to design website layouts, logos and posters which are helpful for students who are planning to work in business. Fashion design teaches students the basics of needlework and textile knowledge. Even if a student isn’t interested in pursuing fashion in their life, they have the skills to fix a problem that involves sewing by themselves instead of seeking help from a professional.
Adding these classes also encourages new high school students to come to McNeil. Students who are interested in these careers could possibly transfer to a different high school that does offer these courses instead. By adding fashion and graphic design, it’ll attract more students and improve the school’s elective options. It would also be helpful for students interested in seeking higher education in these fields after high school when they apply to schools. Lack of prior experience would make it more difficult for the student to get accepted when it is highly competitive, and taking classes beforehand can also help the student build their portfolio before applying.
A way these classes can be offered at the school is by having teachers who are already qualified to teach the subject put in their schedule. Two smaller classes could be merged together to make space for the new course, or it can be taught simultaneously with another similar class. This has already been put into practice because with classes who also have IB students. Overall, adding graphic and fashion design courses better benefit the students and the school by having the option there for students who are interested in these fields to take the classes.
