Labubus, a fuzzy keychain with a devilish smile, have risen to popularity after many celebrity endorsements online. After instances of people fighting to get their hands on a box, to UK pop mart stores having to stop selling them, Labubus continue to be the biggest global trend of 2025 so far.
But the question is, what’s the point? The only thing people do with them is put them (securely, as to avoid them getting stolen) on their bags to show off their most prized Labubu. With etsy sellers now starting to make clothes for Labubus, people who have them now dress them up just to make their Labubu’s “unique”. But that is it. There is no “playing” with these toys, they are purely for collecting and aesthetic reasons. But the fun of opening mystery boxes hinders all of the pointlessness to just get a little hit of dopamine.
Due to market saturation, controversies such as the internet conspiracy linking Labubu’s to the demon Pazuzu – where people claimed that they would get nightmares when owning Labubus and that they needed “spiritual cleansing” – and the cyclical nature of viral trends, in a couple years, maybe even less, these things will probably die out and people will be left with things they can’t do anything with, leaving the markets flooded with people trying to make money off of selling them. Lots of the time the only reason people buy Labubus is due to the trend and their favorite celebrity showing off their latest addition to their collection.
Labubus are also easy bait for scammers. After people started buying Labubus from fake and fraudulent websites, they instead got “Lofufus”, which are fake, poorly made Labubus. The problem, though, is people can get really excited to open one and then have their hopes of getting the “secret” Labubu crushed by the weight of now owning a Lofufu. While the sellers of Lofufus get away with scamming people while also getting a paycheck from unsuspecting victims.
From grown adults fighting to get their hands on a Labubu due to its limited stock, to lines at the door being around the corner at 5 am, these are signs that Labubus need to go.
