The system of test retakes needs to find a better system. After failing a test, the last thing people want to do is redo the same test but have harder problems. The thought of having to try to fix the questions that were wrong on the first test, then having to stress about learning how to do harder problems is an extra task for students.
Although there are some upsides to doing these problems, such as getting a better understanding and being able to do the problems better, it can also be a bad thing. By having to redo the same type of problems over and over again people start to only know how to do those problems, and don’t get a wider understanding of other problems.
Retakes being after or before school can also be problematic for other homework or just any other work, which can be hindered due to studying and staying late or going in early to take another test a couple of days after failing the first one.
Instead, retakes should be transformed into doing test corrections. This way, students get a better understanding of how they got the problem wrong, and really take their time to fix it and learn from their mistakes, corrections can also make sure that student’s grades go up from the corrections, instead of going down if you do worse on the retake than students did on their first test.
The problem with retakes is that it can cause a lot of stress and unnecessary time being wasted having to study for a test that was already taken and having to focus on stuff from the past instead of working on material from the present.
