Lady Mavs cross country is in good shape for their district meet coming up on Friday, Oct. 26.
Varsity took fifth place out of 20 competing schools at the Westlake Friday Night Lights meet. Junior varsity took first out of 18 competing schools. Junior Amelia McElhinney placed first overall in the varsity girls division.
“The juniors have really stepped it up this year making up most of the varsity team,” senior Abby Carine said.
The pace that the team has kept this year has been nothing short of amazing, placing well in each meet. Part of doing so well has to be attributed to how close the team members are with each other.
“We’ve done a lot more team bonding this year than the past few ones including an Olympic marathon watching party, pool party, pasta dinners before meets, and an I-Hop breakfast,” Carine said. “I feel like we’re a family. The girls and guys cross country have practices together and [have been] bonding in that aspect as well.”
“We are very excited about this year,” Coach Chris Cotten said. “I think we will have another good team. This group is very driven and works very hard,” added Cotten.
Junior varsity and the freshmen teams ran at the RRISD Championships on Oct. 19, where they both placed first.
The next upcoming meet is the District 16-5A meet at Old Settlers Park.
“The district cross country meet is this coming Friday and I know everyone is anxious for it,” Carine said. “It’s all about this coming meet. In the past years we’ve made it to regionals by placing in the top three teams at district. I really believe our girls can pull it out again.”
