Swimmers raced their way to the top Saturday at the district meet. School history was made when the girls’ team became district champions and the boys’ team won second overall.
“I’m pretty sure my heart rate spiked a few too many times the last two days,” coach Johnny Foss said. “Never have I got such a workout standing next to a pool.”
The swimmers and their coaches are proud of the team’s achievements. Most swimmers made personal best times and 36 out of 57 swimmers advanced to finals.
“The best part of the meet was the fact that all six of our relays placed first,” senior Frank Park said. “The meet was one of the best experiences of the season.”
Additional to individual success, the teamwork at the meet was reflected in the results. The boys’ team placed second in the district and the girls’ team became district champions for the first time in McNeil history.
“My favorite part of the meet was seeing all the girls and boys place so well in their heats,” sophomore Cara Chin said. “Winning district champs for the first time for the girls was a good thing. Seeing the team do so well pushed me to succeed also.”
Swimmers believe the meet was perfect and say they wouldn’t change a thing.
“I don’t think anything could have gone better,” junior Kira Morgan said. “Everything happened the way it was planned.”
The district meet did not close the season, however. Swimmers and coaches are preparing for the regional meet two weeks from now.
“The best thing is that we get to go do it all over again in two weeks,” Foss said. “Just you wait and see how truly mighty these Mavericks can be.”
