Boys’ Track, Field Triumph at Home Meet
While most students were off kick-starting their spring breaks or indulging in the tradition of ‘Senior Skip Day,’ the boys’ track and field team spent March 7 raking in the awards during the 2014 Maverick Relays. Playing in a chilly environment did not detract from their performances: the team won a total of seven major awards and placed seventh overall.
In the 200 Meter Dash, senior Ugo Okoye won first place with a time of 24.14. Senior Jackx Rogers secured second with a close time of 24.19.
Seniors Ryan Sabatino and Corans Fisher both placed third in the 400 meter dash with times of 56.84 and 54.96 respectively.
The 4×800 Meter Relay resulted in an second place victory for seniors Peyton Heining and Riley Bloodgood, and juniors Matthew Kelly, Dylan McAndrew, and Brandon Perrey; the team finished the circuit with a time of 8:20.66.
The Shuttle Hurdle runners took second place thanks to the efforts of sophomores Matthew Wright, Jonathan Boozer, and Julius Fonacier; junior Adam Thane closed with a time of 1:09.14.
“It was definitely a team effort,” Thane said. “We were practicing every day two weeks before [the event]. It was nice to have the hard work pay off.”
And finishing up with second place in the Pole Vault event was senior Colton Russell, who attained a height of 12-06.00.
The team attended a district meet April 8-10, and are to attend a Varsity UIL regional meet on April 25-26 at Baylor University.
