Varsity Tennis welcomes new coaches

The start of tennis season began with the start of school. The varsity team has been off to a slow start, but there is still time for them to catch up and redeem their second place district title from last year. District will be held October 5-8.

“I like that we have a high interest in tennis and I hope that we can all get better together as a team,” head coach Janie Samreth said.

The team is under the guidance of two new coaches: Samreth and assistant coach Jennifer Moore. They have incorporated more conditioning into everyday practices to keep players on their feet and push themselves during matches.

“I play a supportive role and help Coach Samreth with the process and procedure since she is new to the district,” Coach Moore said. “It works out because we both play off each other and I focus more on increasing conditioning to make the team stronger.”

With new drills organized, players practice skills based on what they feel like they need to improve on. After every match, Coach Samreth incorporates drills based on where the player needs to improve before the next match.

“We have big shoes to fill this year given the strong senior team from last year,” Coach Samreth said. “We need to put in a lot of time for consistent practice and foster a supportive family environment where both varsity and JV can work well together.”
Varsity matches are each Tuesday and Friday after school. Even though every match doesn’t count towards district points, team captain, senior Zach Minns encourages everyone to try their best and keep a positive outlook.

“Everyone has the tools to win, they just need to believe that they can,” Minns said. “They just need to stay positive and keep their energy up no matter what’s happening in the match.”
