Boys’ basketball starts season with high hopes

The varsity boys’ basketball team began its season with a 56-53 win over Georgetown Nov. 17. They don’t start district competition until December, but the team is excited for the season and the possibility of making it far in the postseason.

“We are all looking forward to the games starting,” Head Coach Darrell Hagemann said. “These guys put in a bunch of time in the off-season. The games are why they work so hard.”

The Mavericks have a history of success in the postseason; they were regional semifinalists last season and have made 19 appearances in the playoffs over 23 years.

Senior Tre McCou, a small forward in his first season on varsity, said his goal is to get to the state championship.

“[The team chemistry] is pretty good,” McCou said. “We’re really close this year. We’re bonding really well.”

The varsity team traveled to San Antonio Nov. 21 to play Lake Travis in the AT&T Center, where the San Antonio Spurs play. They won the game 57-44, and after two victories over Bowie and Cedar Park the Mavericks hold an undefeated record.

“The Lake Travis game fit into the Spurs schedule and we think it is a great way to start off a season,” Hagemann said. “It is a fun day for everyone involved.”

The Mavericks are entering into a promising season with strong senior leaders, encouraging new players, and high hopes to, as Coach Hagemman said, “add to the banners and the hardware.”
