The McNeil varsity basketball team played in the 37th Jack Frost Tournament at in Georgetown Thursday Dec. 3 through Saturday Dec. 5. The Mavs represented well, winning four out of their five games and winning the Silver bracket.
McNeil had a narrow win in their first game of the tournament against Temple on Thursday. It came down to one point, but the Mavs pulled through with a final score of 67-66.
The next day, the team won their morning game against Colleyville- Heritage 47 to 41. Unfortunately, the afternoon game against San Antonio Churchill was a loss by a four-point margin. The game was the team’s only loss of the tournament, and marked just the second loss up to that point in the season.
McNeil advanced out of pool play to bracket play on Saturday, where they played Leander and Belton. Both contests were victories for the Mavs, 52-46 and 66-56 respectively.
Head Coach Darell Hagemann was pleased with the team’s overall performance, and said that they played well as a group, especially in the bracket games.
“We were coming off a loss to San Antonio Churchill and I thought we responded well,” Hagemann said. “We just need to work on being more consistent.”
Adding to the team’s success, Junior Victor Bailey, Jr. was named to the Boys’ All-Tournament Team.
The team also participated in the Leander Tournament, where they won two of their four games. They had their first district victory, 68 to 55, on Friday, Dec. 18 versus Cedar Ridge.
Over winter break they played in the Whataburger Classic in Fort Worth with a winning record, 3-1.
