Maverick Soccer Starts Off Strong
Both the boy’s and girl’s varsity soccer teams played their first tournaments of the season over the weekend. The boys won all three of their games in the Leander Glenn Tournament, and the girls won one out of their three games in the Governor’s Tournament. However, the girls team still gave an impressive performance, scoring six goals in the first half of their match win against the Cornerstone Chrisian Warriors. They would win the game 8-0. Similarly, the boys team also scored six goals in the first half of their game against the Mexia Black Cats, winning 7-0.
“The tournament last weekend was a success,” Robert Koenig, a senior on varsity, said. “It was a good growing opportunity as a new team to build chemistry, and considering we won our games, I’d say we did well.”
The soccer season is far from over, with games currently scheduled through February. The girls have already won another game, beating the Bastrop Bears 6-1 last Tuesday night, and the boys tied their game last Thursday against the Canyon Cougars 1-1. The next games are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 22 at 7:15 p.m. against Elgin for the girls, and Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. against Hutto for the boys.
