The first varsity football game of the season was an exciting one. Within the last two minutes McNeil scored a touchdown that put them in the lead. The scoreboard read 40-35 while the last quarter was slowly ticking by. In the end, the game was a success and the team took home a win.

McNeil won its first varsity football game of the season against Del Valle with a score of 40-35 last Friday.

“[The team was] excited,” Hermes said. “[They were] happy to see their hard work pay off on the scoreboard.”

Football coach Scott Hermes was excited about the victory against Del Valle. The team’s confidence was boosted from the win as well.  However, they know they didn’t play a perfect game. While preparing for the homecoming game, athletes will be working harder than ever.

“Ultimately we know we made a lot of mistakes and need to get them corrected,” Hermes said. “The pressure is on for every athlete to perform their best. When everyone is doing their part, the wins take care of themselves.

The game was exciting for both the football team and the student section. It kept everyone on their toes and hoping for the best outcome. There wasn’t a time during the game where someone could tell who would win.

“I don’t ever assume,” Hermes said. “Not until the clock hits 0.0.”

With the pressure of the first game, combined with the neck and neck ending, the entire school was excited about the win. The team, coaches, and students are still buzzing with excitement.

“It was a great team win,” Hermes said. “I’m extremely proud of the toughness they showed and the character they exhibited to fight back in the 4th quarter to regain the lead.”
